The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) shares the global ambition to address biodiversity loss in the framework of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. When offshore oil and gas structures come to the end of their useful life, owners, operators, regulatory authorities, in consultation with other stakeholders, decide on the best option for the future of the structures. The question is whether to completely or partially remove them to shore, to decommission in-situ, or to move to a different location at sea. This brief paper outlines IOGP's position supporting alternatives to full removal of decommissioned infrastructure.
