Rotary (Drilling) Level 3 and Level 4 practical assessments have long been part of well control certification. Building on the expertise gained through virtual certification, there is an opportunity to incorporate a practical component for Completion and Intervention training as recommended in IOGP Report 476 - Recommendations for enhancements to well control training, examination and certification. With the continued focus on intervention and abandonment operations it is important to ensure the appropriate capabilities are tested. IOGP’s Wells Competency and Training Subcommittee, under the auspices of the Wells Expert Committee (WEC), has conducted a review on introducing an intervention practical assessment. They have concluded that practical assessments should focus solely on the Compulsory Completions Operations module, using standardized scenarios, such as kill operations by bullheading or reverse circulation. These exercises would emphasize situational interpretation, calculated responses, and teamwork, but industry concerns about their value and feasibility remain a challenge to implementation.
