This paper highlights key considerations, risks, and opportunities associated with well control during Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) operations, particularly where CO2 behaviour introduces challenges that differ from conventional oil and gas well operations. It aims to support operators, drilling and well engineers, well control specialists, and service companies in strengthening risk-based thinking and enhancing the effectiveness of controls and barriers during the planning, execution, and assurance of CCS well operations. This paper covers considerations related to modelling, well control methods and kick detection, well control equipment, personnel safety, competency and training, relief well and kill procedures, well integrity, and well intervention.
