The IOGP P6/11 format is the most comprehensive standard in the oil and gas industry for the exchange, monitoring, and archiving of 3D seismic bin grid position data. First released in 2012, it replaces and overcomes the limitations of the dated UKOOA P6/98 format. P6/11 also supersedes UKOOA P1/90 where it has been used for exchanging bin grid parameters through non-standard templates, or “Q-records” for bin node coordinates. It is specifically designed for both defining the geometry of a bin grid and, where required, recording the coordinates of the bin nodes, thereby overcoming data workflow challenges and enhancing the overall exchange experience. The extensible design of the format allows the bin grid geometry to be monitored through time, its spatial integrity assured as it adapts to progressive operations on the 3D volume, such as re-sampling, re-orientation, merging with other datasets, and changes incurred by exchange, especially reprojection. The format complies fully with IOGP’s EPSG coordinate modelling, a geodetic data model based on the ISO standard for spatial referencing by coordinates, and with the EPSG geodetic dataset, a widely adopted database of geodetic definitions. This ensures that position data written to the format is rigorously and consistently defined, eliminating the possibility for ambiguity or misinterpretation. In summary, the IOGP P6/11 format provides the single universally applicable solution to present and future exchange and long-term archival of seismic bin grid data. This Report is the user guide for version 2.0 of IOGP’s P6/11 format technical specification. Although generally relevant also to earlier versions of the format, it should be read specifically in relation to version 2.0 as released in June 2024.
